Jonathan Franklin ART
The figure is the central player in my work although I use it not as an end in itself but rather a means to an end. It is not the literal representation of the figure or its environment that interests me nor do I rely on conventional themes such as still-life, landscape, or portraiture to describe it. Rather, the subjects are more intuitive and are as much about contrasting, shapes, and colors as they are about the inherent tensions that exist between abstraction and realism.
Years ago working as a printmaker I discovered how, like painting and drawing, printmaking is about problem solving, making choices and finding new solutions. But printmaking records the process in the course of creating art, revealing how things evolve and develop over time step by step through repetition. Although I no longer work as a printmaker it still affects how I visualize and create art.
